Sustainability

We believe that a first-rate sustainability program isn’t the right way to do business, it’s the only way to do business. We invest considerably in reducing our environmental impact, such as by incorporating recycled materials into our asphalt production, and creating programs to support local communities, such as our growing roster of wildlife habitats on properties nationwide. Our environmental policy is to:

CRH Sustainability Compliance

  • Comply, at a minimum, with all applicable environmental legislation and continually improve our environmental stewardship
  • Ensure that our employees and contractors respect environmental responsibilities
  • Proactively address the challenges and opportunities of climate change
  • Optimize our use of energy and resources through efficiency gains and recycling
  • Promote environmentally driven product and process innovation and new business opportunities
  • Be good neighbors in the many communities in which we operate

The following are some ways that we demonstrate our commitment to sustainability.

Warm-Mix Asphalt

Warm Mix AsphaltAsphalt mixtures are critical infrastructure building materials. They consist of a blend of about 95 percent stone and sand, heated and bound together with bituminous asphalt. Warm-Mix Asphalt (WMA) has been developed to lower the production and placement temperature of traditional Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA). It reduces energy consumption and plant emissions and increases the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement.

Restoration Projects

Environmental stewardship requires the use of stone products for projects like this one. In partnership with MidSouth Materials’ Warren County Quarry, Conrad Yelvington Distributors (CYD) developed a specialized drain sand for the design of the Indian River Lagoon-South C-44 Reservoir and Stormwater Treatment Area in Martin County, FL.

Restoration Projects

The project calls for approximately 550,000 tons of drain sand over four years, which will be used to filter the water in the reservoir. To date, around 35% of the order (200,000+ tons) has been produced and shipped with high satisfaction regarding quality, particle size analysis and quantity requirements.

Porous Pavement

In keeping with its commitment to stay on the cutting edge, we install porous pavement, which allows rain to move through asphalt and into a rock layer placed below the pavement.

We support the community in several ways, both as a parent company and as individual companies in local communities. The environment remains a focus, particularly in communities where our companies operate and our widespread network of companies ensures that many nonprofit groups and charities are supported.
